Laura Eliel, the owner of Bittersweet Cakes and Catering and Smythwick Castle and Events, lost her 18 year old son Daniel when he was rear ended by a vehicle while driving his motorcycle. His death, and her grief journey, was all the more complicated as she arrived on scene only to be told it was her son’s fault when video evidence later showed that he was doing everything right, the other driver was just distracted. Thus began her journey searching for a way to make meaning out of this senseless tragedy, finally culminating in creating a weekend retreat for others with tragic or traumatic losses to show that above all – we are not alone. She also realizes that everyone processes grief differently and is thus providing a variety of tools in the hopes that she can help others move forward positively in their grief journey. Her husband was hit hard as well, but together they have worked to celebrate Daniel’s memory and remain committed to each other.
This weekend is directed toward those that have experienced tragic and traumatic unexpected losses of loved ones. Everyone grieves differently, therefore, this weekend will be an exploration of experiences – therapy options, relaxation techniques and renewal of spirit – and will also provide a chance to talk, support and bond with others who have had similar experiences and are also on this journey. You are not alone – and yes, there is light at the end of the tunnel.
