Camp Agape is accepting applications to its free summer program for children grieving the loss of a loved one. This year’s camp is scheduled for July 8-11 at Camp Buckner Retreat Center in the Texas Hill Country. Children between the ages of 7 and 12 attend Camp Agape at no cost to their families. Register eligible children now at the Camp Agape website –www.CampAgapeTexas.org
Christen McVaney, the camp’s executive director, said, “I love that Camp Agape allows these precious children to come meet others with similar losses so they no longer feel alone in their grief, and it truly gives them hope for their future.”
Children who attend Camp Agape are dealing with loss of a parent or other significant familial figure from tragedies such as homicide, suicide, illness or military combat. Camp Agape provides the fun of a normal summer camp including swimming, low ropes and fishing. In addition, group therapy activities incorporate the use of art and music to assist children with the bereavement process.
Children arrive the afternoon of Monday, July 8. Fun and therapeutic activities are scheduled throughout the day on Tuesday and Wednesday. Children head home Thursday morning.
Camp Agape, a ministry founded on the premise that Jesus Christ offers hope in all circumstances, is seeking volunteers for this summer’s camp. The time commitment varies from attending the entire time (July 7-11) to helping on the opening and closing days of camp. In addition to being a buddy to a camper, volunteers are needed for the registration team, greeting campers and their families, and providing audio/visual support.
